Persatuan Memancing Malaysia or PeMM as it is affectionately known was officially registered on June 25, 1990. It is the only registered federal angling association in Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak. Originally formed as an association for the pursuit of angling activities, it soon dawned upon the office bearers that the future of Malaysian angling depended on the protection of the environment and its natural resources. With this in mind, PeMM embarked on its quest to educate the public and to protect the environment. Starting on a small scale, PeMM soon established herself as a defender of the environment especially when alien species of fishes were introduced into Malaysian waters. PeMM saw the need to educate the public as to the possible destruction of our local fish population and habitats caused by the introduction of alien species either by intentional release or by accident. Thus was launched the Save Our Species (SOS) campaign to combat the annihilation of our local species. This campaign is still on going as more and more alien species are introduced into the local market. The practice of Catch and Release was also introduced to the Malaysian angling scene with much comments from the general public, but with constant advocation by PeMM members, Catch and Release has now become the norm for most anglers. The pinnacle being the Catch, Photograph, Tag and Release of billfishes in an international angling competition like the Royal Pahang Billfish International Challenge. A few years down the line, PeMM joined the serious ranks of NGO works when we collaborated with Global Environment Centre, the Danish Angling Association and Majlis Perbandaran Petaling Jaya in the rehabilitation of the Kelana Jaya Lakes in Petaling Jaya. Educational programmes with environmental themes were simultaneously launched in secondary schools to create and nurture the awareness of the younger generation. PeMM's vision and efforts in the NGO field did not go unnoticed when McDonalds Malaysia sponsored the PeMM Billfish Conservation Programme in 2003. It proved to be a successful joint venture and has till this day been successful in ensuring the survival of and propagation of the billfish population in Malaysian waters. PeMM is also regularly called upon to assists Governmental establishments
to formulate Last but not least, PeMM being a federal angling association takes upon herself to look into the welfare of the Malaysian angling fraternity, being vocal when the need arises to address issues concerning the Malaysian angling scene. Though NGO work remained PeMM's forte, she still remains an angling association
with 1 million anglers. As her members remain a priority, activities such
as angling trips (both local and overseas), clinics, workshops, etc are
arranged regularly for their benefit. That is PeMM's goal. That is PeMM's vision. The coming of age of an Ethical
Angler; practicing Catch and Release, Bag and Size limits so that our
next generation of anglers can appreciate the heritage left to them. A
heritage so fragile, if not taken seriously could be lost forever. |
